Why the numbers don't agree

Use these figures to spot a quote that's far out of line, not to predict your exact price.

What changes the price

Will insurance pay?

The Insurance Information Institute says that when a tree hits your house or another insured building, removal is generally covered, up to about $500 to $1,000. When the tree falls without hitting a building, removal generally isn't covered, though some insurers pay when it blocks a driveway or an accessibility ramp. Check your own policy.

How to compare quotes

  1. Get the price in writing, with what's included: cutting, cleanup, hauling and the stump.
  2. Compare the same job. A lower price that leaves the wood on your lawn isn't the same offer.
  3. Ask for proof of insurance before work starts.
  4. Ask about payment. Be careful with anyone who wants full payment before the work is done.
